Meadowlark sighted in our backyard!

We had a visit this morning from a bird we don't usually see in these parts: the Western meadowlark. We think it's a meadowlark, although its markings are not exactly as pictured in our bird book.  All you birders out there, whaddya think? The bird was actually not this orange in reality, but pretty yellow-breasted. Here's another image I found online. Ours doesn't have the distinctive black throat markings, but it does have the striped head. Meadowlark or not meadowlark? You decide...

That's crazy! I wouldn't think you'd see a meadowlark in the city. We seem to have Western Tanagers nesting in our yard. I hadn't seen on e in years and they're all over the place this spring.

Yeah, we were kinda surprised too. They're country birds, not city slickers. Still, despite fuzzy quality of photo, we got a pretty good look at it and are pretty sure it's a meadowlark. Kewl, huh?

I was thinking about this again. Google varied thrush and see of that could be it. It's a lot more likely in an urban yard.

Yup, I think you're right. Just looked at it and it does look more like a varied thrush. Did you see the grosbeak pics I put up? We're going to go birding in Oaks Bottom with Audubon later this month. Beth has made a birder of me.
